September 18 - 21, 2025
U-Haul Gallery is pleased to announce Paulina Freifeld: Luciérnaga
Featuring images mined from her families photographic archive, and of the Familia G Mexican banknote series, Freifeld’s lightboxes evoke a halcyon era collapsing under the weight of it’s own expansion.
The Familia G pesos feature images of Mexican flora and fauna, on the verge of destruction in service to the note they are printed on. Freifeld’s familial history and ancestral memories, reinforced through photography and storytelling, converge with explorations of capital and ecological destruction. Her work emphasizes the fragility of spiritual and communal spaces. Luciérnaga presents images and memories of Yucatán, an area seeing it’s indispensable cenotes destroyed by overdevelopment caused by the construction of the Tren Maya. In New York, the show will occur on and around Wall Street.
The works in Luciérnaga will be on view from 4pm to 2am from Thursday September 18th to Sunday September 22nd. Please join us for an opening reception on Thursday September 18th outside the United States Court of International Trade at 1 Lafayette Street, New York NY from 6-8pm.
